In the story, we’d be the Israelites shaking in our boots, unable to do anything about this Goliath. Our Goliath is much greater, being sin itself. We, in fact, see we’re not David and our Goliaths aren’t just day-to-day struggles we must overcome. When we look to see how this fits in the metanarrative, though, everything changes. We need to “man up” and face our Goliaths. 17)- This is typically told with a moral lesson.

While it’s impossible to cover every type of Bible story and share how it fits in this Big Story, let’s cover a few examples.ĭavid and Goliath (1 Sam. Also, every effect of the Fall will be no more. Those who accept Christ, though, will see Him face to face and spend eternity with Him. Those who reject Christ will experience His eternal wrath. One day, Christ will return and restore all things. They couldn’t, so God provides a covering for them, pointing to Jesus’ death providing the spiritual covering necessary for our sin and shame (Gen. After the Fall, they felt shame and tried to cover themselves. Before sin, Adam and Eve were naked and felt no shame (Gen. The Old Testament saints longed for the coming of Christ, but now, we get to live in the reality that Christ has come! This promise of rescue that began in Genesis 3:15 has been fulfilled.Īt the end of Genesis 3, Christ’s future work on this cross is foreshadowed. The prophets proclaim of His coming, death, resurrection, and second coming. The kings show the only true and perfect King is Jesus. Judges point to Christ, the coming better Judge. This Seed is Jesus, and the rest of the Old Testament points to His coming. In Genesis 3:15, God promises a Seed to crush the head of Satan. However, right after God administered the curses, He administered the hope. Things would be extremely hopeless if God left Adam and Eve after the curse of the Fall. We now have conflict with one another, our bodies fail, work is difficult, and more. Also, the Fall impacts every part of human life. Our deepest need is to be reconciled back to God. Because of sin, man’s biggest problem is separation from a holy God. In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, and sin entered the world. Nothing is perfect, right? That’s because of the Fall. We can look around us today and note that something happened. Adam and Eve had perfect fellowship with God and one another. He also created man and woman in His image. In the beginning God created everything - heavens, earth, and people (Gen. The metanarrative “Big Story” of the Bible has four main parts: Understanding this provides great richness and depth to our Bible study. Since it’s all one Big Story, there’s also just one main character - God. Every story, Psalm, prayer, epistle, and prophecy fall into the backdrop of this Big Story. Unlike those storybooks, every single passage of the Bible weaves together to create one beautiful metanarrative (aka- Big Story). Other times, we just skip such passages all together. Therefore, we either read these passages with little comprehension, or we put a moral twist on them, making them like a fable. Stories about ancient Israelites seem irrelevant. Because of this, books like Leviticus are difficult to read. This leads to misinterpretation of who the Bible’s main character is.

Stories such as Noah’s Ark and David and Goliath are bound in the same book, but they seem unrelated. These stories, though bound in the same book, are generally unrelated. One story takes us on a fictional camping trip before bedtime, then another story in the same volume teaches us about making friends the next evening. They each contain multiple stories, perfect for a five-minute reading before bedtime. Volumes of storybooks fill my boys’ bookshelves.
